[[Mechelen]] (French: ''Malines'', German: ''Mecheln'') is a
Belgian city in Flanders, Antwerp province, and is located between Antwerp city and Brussels. The river which crosses the centre of Mechelen is called [[Dijle]]. Nowadays the city has about 80.000 inhabitants.
Mechelen has known a rich history and a short period in the 16th century (under Carl V and Margareth from Austria), the city was the capital of the Netherlands, dominating whole Flanders and Holland. Mechelen has the second largest number of protected buildings in Flanders.
