[[Mechelen]] (French: ''Malines'', German: ''Mecheln'') is a city in Flanders, Antwerp province, and is located between the cities of Antwerp city and of Brussels. The river which crosses the centre of Mechelen is called [[Dijle]]runs through its centre. Nowadays the city municipality has about 80.,000 inhabitants.
Mechelen has known a rich history , and for a short period in the 16th century (under Carl Charles V 's guardian and Margareth from governess Margaret of Austria), the city was dominated entire Flanders and Holland as the capital of the Netherlands, dominating whole Flanders and Holland. Mechelen has the second largest number of protected buildings in Flanders.
